Caring for Your New Smile: Dental Implant Post-Procedure Guide

post implants instructions

Congratulations on taking the next step toward a healthy, complete smile! Getting a dental implant is a big deal, and how you care for yourself over the next few days makes a huge difference in how quickly you heal. Think of your new implant like a seedling—it needs a little quiet time to take root in your jaw firmly.

Here is a simple guide to help you stay comfortable and keep your recovery on track.

The First 24 Hours: Take it Easy

The day of your procedure is all about rest. You might still feel a bit numb or sleepy from the appointment, so find a cozy spot on the couch and relax.

Hands Off

It’s tempting to feel around with your tongue or fingers, but please leave the area alone. Touching the site can introduce bacteria or disturb the healing tissue.

Biting Down

If our team placed gauze over the site, keep firm (but gentle) pressure on it for about 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace it with a fresh piece of gauze.

Keep it Cool

To help with any swelling, you can apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek. Use a “20 minutes on, 20 minutes off” cycle for the first afternoon.

What to Eat (and What to Skip)

Your mouth will be a little sensitive, so your diet should reflect that. For the first few days, stick to soft foods that don’t require much chewing.

The Good Stuff

Yogurt, lukewarm soups, mashed potatoes, applesauce, and smoothies (eat these with a spoon!).

The "No" List

Avoid anything crunchy, spicy, or very hot. Most importantly, do not use a straw. Suction can pull on the healing site, leading to complications.

Keeping Your Mouth Clean

Cleanliness is key, but you have to be gentle.

Day One

Don’t rinse or spit forcefully.

Day Two and Beyond

You can start rinsing very gently with warm salt water a few times a day. This keeps the area clean without the harsh chemicals found in some mouthwashes.

Brushing

Keep brushing your other teeth as usual, but be incredibly careful around the implant site for the first week.

When to Give Us a Call

A little bit of swelling and minor discomfort is totally normal—it’s just your body doing its job!
