5 Steps to Good Oral Health

5 steps to good oral health
Good oral health must be maintained at every age. Teeth and gums allow you to eat, speak, and smile painlessly. Practicing regular dental care and good habits every day helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other issues. The best part? There are simple ways to keep your mouth healthy. Here are the 5 easy steps which you can do daily.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

Brush your teeth in the morning and at bedtime. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Spend at least two minutes brushing each time. Loosely brushing the gum line while cleaning all the surfaces is recommended. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or as soon as the bristles look worn.

Floss Daily

Flossing removes food and plaque from between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. If plaque stays between teeth, it can lead to cavities and gum disease. Use about 18 inches of floss and gently slide it between each tooth. If floss is hard to use, floss picks or water flossers can also help.

Eat a Tooth-Friendly Diet

What you eat affects your teeth. Avoid giving your child excess sugar from snacks, popsicles, or coffee. These may lead to tooth decay. Select foods that strengthen your teeth, like fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, yogurt and nuts instead. Drinking water, especially fluoridated tap water, helps rinse away food particles to clean your mouth.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regular dental checkups are key to good oral health. A dentist can spot problems early, before they become severe or painful. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing may miss. Most Canadians benefit from a dental visit every six months, but your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your needs.

Protect Your Teeth

If you play sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth from injury. Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite complex objects like ice. If you grind your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about a custom night guard.

Taking small steps each day can make a big difference. With good habits and regular care, you can enjoy a healthy smile for years to come.
